YEAR IN REVIEW

As we enter our 130th year, we continue to be the strong community asset that James Gamble envisioned when he founded our institution in 1889. His generosity, and that of Isabella Thoburn, laid the groundwork for us to provide our patients, and our community, with compassionate, innovative and world-class care.

Our continued recognitions and awards are a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our more than 6,500 employees, 1,200 physicians and 600 volunteers. These individuals drive new research, giving patients new hope. They heal, comfort and care for our patients and family members, providing an experience that is second to none. With innovation, creativity and technical expertise, they ensure we will be here to serve the community for years to come.

This annual report highlights these accomplishments and how we continue to transform the way healthcare is delivered.

Our founders had a vision of how this hospital could fill a need within the community, and I’m proud to say that, 130 years later, we continue to be good stewards of that vision.

I hope you enjoy the report. Thank you.

The Christ Hospital Timeline

  • 1889
  • 1889

Christ's Hospital is dedicated at 46 York Street in a home donated by James Gamble. Unlike traditional hospital wards of the time, Christ's Hospital's wards have the appearance of a well-kept private dwelling.

  • 1930

The North Wing is completed, including the hospital's iconic cupola, which has become one of the most enduring and distinctive landmarks on the Cincinnati skyline.

  • 1962

The Christ Hospital opens an intensive care unit, the first of its kind in the area.

  • 1969

The department of cardiac surgery is formed. A total of 13 open heart procedures are performed in the first year, including the first open heart surgery in the region.

  • 2008

The Christ Hospital navigates significant change as it transitions to an independent hospital, reestablishing The Christ Hospital Medical Associates, the hospital's primary care physician group.

  • 2010

An initiative begins to bring care to people in their own neighborhoods. Outpatient Centers open in Anderson and Red Bank, followed by Green Township, Ft. Wright and Montgomery.

  • 2012
    The Christ Hospital Health Network

The Christ Hospital implements a new brand identity, becoming The Christ Hospital Health Network, to better extend our reach in the community and breadth of services outside the hospital setting. The Christ Hospital Medical Associates is also renamed as The Christ Hospital Physicians.

  • 2015

The first patient is seen in the Joint & Spine Center, a national healthcare destination, and first of its kind in the region, keeping the continuum of care under one roof.

  • 2018

The Christ Hospital Medical Center – Liberty Township opens, offering a state-of-the-art family birthing center, emergency room and many other comprehensive services.

  • 2019

The Christ Hospital Outpatient Center in Miami Township opens in 2019 and houses primary care offices, lab/testing services and physical therapy. Additional services include OB/GYN, urogynecology, and diabetes & endocrinology.

  • 2019

As a nurse for over 30 years, our continuing recognition as a Magnet-designated hospital means so much to me, as it recognizes nursing excellence and innovation in nursing, a recognition that only 8% of hospitals nationally have achieved. All of these awards confirm what I already know: that The Christ Hospital Health Network is a world-class organization and continues to provide its patients, their families, and its employees with the highest quality experience available.
